GET INVOLVED! Offering a wide range of programs geared towards both youth and adult education, Garfield Park Conservatory and Sunken Garden provides a unique setting for engaged learning. Read below to learn up to date information on programs, seasonal displays, lecture series, club events and much more!

Girl Scouts


Our environmental education team has partnered with the Girl Scouts of America to provide rainforest, ecology and conservation programs for your Girl Scouts.

2nd Tuesday of each month     Ages: 2-5 (with adult)     Time: 10-11am      Fee: $4 per session

This popular preschool program focuses on the rain forest and our local environment. Join us each month for a different nature-related story, activity, and craft. Activities may be messy or involve going outdoors, so dress appropriately. This program fills up fast and pre-registration is required.

Join Master Gardeners as they conduct tours highlighting information about the interesting and unusual plants in the Conservatory.   Tours begin at 2:30pm every Saturday in June, July, and August, and the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month from September through May.

All About Bees
Date:Sunday, August 3     Time:1:30-3:30 p.m.     Free      Ages: 16+
Meet our beekeeper and learn about bee biology and why they are important to our gardens and our world. Experience first-hand how honey is harvested and taste a sample. Registration required (218837).

Cooking with Herbs
Date: Saturday, August 9       Time:10-11 a.m.      Fee:$5 per person
Join the Central Indiana Herb Society in making herbal soup wreaths with herbs harvested from our Children’s Garden. Registration required by calling 327-PARK (218836). Payment will be collected by instructor.

Buzzing Bees
      Date: Saturday, August 9      Time: 2-3 p.m.       Fee: $5      Ages: 5-12
Have fun in the garden as we learn about bees and why they’re so important. Sample some fresh honey, experience what life is like inside the hive, and make a fun bee craft. Registration required(218823).

Backyard Nature: Praying Mantis
Date:Wednesday, August 20     Time:10-11 a.m.     Fee: $4 per child      Ages: 2-8
Come help us search for these stealth creatures in the garden! We’ll learn about praying mantids and other cool bugs and do a buggy craft! Registration required (218220).

80’s Dance Party at the Conservatory
Date:September 5     Time: 6-9 p.m.     Admission: $3 per person
Break out your neon colors and big hair as we celebrate the 80’s. Activities include games, trivia, dancing and fun! Dance contest at 8:00 p.m. Raffle at 8:30 p.m.     Fun for the whole family!

Rose Show
Date: Saturday Sept. 6     Time: 12-4 p.m.      Fee: $1 per person
The Indianapolis Rose Society will present a display show of many different rose varieties. Society members will also be on hand, so bring your questions!

Early Morning Photography
Date: Saturday, September 20     Time: 8-10 a.m.     Fee: $5 per person     Ages: Adult

Garden Groceries

Come enjoy the fruits of our labor! The summer’s harvest should be ripe and ready for picking. Stop by the Children’s Garden and learn about the benefits of eating your fruits and vegetables and have the chance pick some fresh produce to take home!

Leaf Hoppers
Date: Monday, September 22     Time: 10-11 a.m.      Fee: $4 per child      Ages: 2-5
Join us for all kinds of leafy fun! We’ll do a leaf craft and find all different kinds of leaves – and, of course, find out why leaves are so important to plants! Registration required (221571).

Orchids 101
Date:Saturday, September 27     Time: 1:30-2:20 p.m.     Ages: Adult      Fee: $6 per person
This is a great opportunity to learn the basics about growing orchids at home! Orchid beginners will learn the basics of watering and repotting and what orchids make the best houseplants. Price includes admission to the Orchid Fest display. Registration required (221580).

Orchid Fest
Date:September 27-October 5      Admission: $3 per person or $8 per family (2 adults max.)
Don’t miss this display of hundreds of blooming orchids set against the backdrop of the tropical Conservatory. Orchids and growing supplies, as well as growing advice will also be available during this special event.

Garfield Park Conservatory Photo Contest
Date: Friday October 3     Time:6-9 p.m.      Admission:$3 per person     Ages: 12+
Do you enjoy photography? Have you taken some great shots here at the Conservatory and Gardens? Do you long for an outlet to share these special images? If you answered yes, then consider entering the GPC Photo Contest. Photo submission is free, limited to one entry per person and you could win a $50 gift card to Roberts Camera or a $25 gift card to the Garfield Eatery on Shelby St.

Seed Savers
Date:Saturday October 11      Time: 10:30-11:30 p.m.     Fee: $5 per person      Ages: Adult
Join us and learn to be a savvy seed saver! Save money on next year’s gardening by learning seed saving tricks and tips. See what seeds can be collected from our Children’s Garden for you to take home to your garden. Registration required (221579).

Terrific Topiary
Date: Sunday October 19     Time:2-3 p.m.     Fee:$15 per craft     Ages: 5+
Decorate a pot and create your own ivy topiary. You’ll be set with a handmade holiday center piece! This program is open to all ages, though young children will need an adult to stay and help. Registration required (221575).

Creepy Creatures
Date:Monday October 27     Time: 10-11 a.m.     Fee:$4 per child      Ages: 2-5
Put on your Halloween costume and come learn about some creepy and not-so-creepy creatures! Have fun meeting live critters and doing a craft. Registration required(221572).

Haunted Conservatory
Dates:October 29-30     Time: 5:30-8:30 p.m.     Fee: $2 per person
Get spooked as you walk through this year’s Haunted Conservatory! It will be less scary from 5:30-7 p.m., and the real haunting begins at 7 p.m. (recommended for ages 8+). Make sure to check out other fun (and free!) events at the Arts Center and Family Center as a part of Ghoulish Garfield!
