GET INVOLVED! Offering a wide range of programs geared towards both youth and adult education, Garfield Park Conservatory and Sunken Garden provides a unique setting for engaged learning. Read below to learn up to date information on programs, seasonal displays, lecture series, club events and much more!

Girl Scouts


Our environmental education team has partnered with the Girl Scouts of America to provide rainforest, ecology and conservation programs for your Girl Scouts.

This popular preschool program focuses on the rain forest and our local environment. Join us each month for a different nature-related story, activity, and craft. Activities may be messy or involve going outdoors, so dress appropriately. This program fills up fast and pre-registration is required.

JUNIOR GARDEN CLUB (formerly Junior Master Gardener)
Wednesdays June 4-July 30      Ages: 6-14      Time: 10a.m.-12p.m.      Fee: $40/child

It’s time for some gardening fun! Participants in JGC will learn all about gardening and spend time planting and tending to their own vegetables in our Children’s Garden. There is a different topic each session, but don’t worry if you can’t make it to them all. Registration required by May 30th (218821).

Bring your students to explore a different nature topic each session. Come to one or come to all. Younger and older children are welcome to register; however content will be geared for children in 1st-3rd grade. Registration required.

Join Master Gardeners as they conduct tours highlighting information about the interesting and unusual plants in the Conservatory.   Tours begin at 2:30pm every Saturday in June, July, and August, and the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month from September through May.

First Friday Theme Party: 50s Sock Hop
Date: Friday May 2       Time: 6-9 p.m.     Fee: $3/person
Dust off your poodle skirt and saddle shoes, grab your sweetie or bestie, and make your way down to the Conservatory to celebrate the 50s with trivia, music, and a dance contest. There will be a food truck on site and prizes for trivia, dancing and best 50s costume.

Ages: 16+      Date:   Saturday May 3       Time: 10-11 a.m.      Fee: $5/person
Join the Central Indiana Herb Society and make your own small herbal container garden. Learn how to care for and use these plants in this hands-on program.

Garfield Park Chalk Art Festival and Competition
Date: Saturday, May 10
Help us decorate Garfield Park by creating works of art on our sidewalks with colorful chalk! Everyone gets a prize. The festival is for all ages and all experience levels. Bring your own chalk, or purchase a chalk kit for only $3. Adults and Teens may register for a judged competition! Register between 10:00 Am and 2:00PM at the Garfield Park Arts Center. Artwork to be judged must be completed by 3:00PM.

Master Gardener Plant Sale
Date:Saturday, May 17       Time: 9 a.m.-12 p.m.
This is not just a sale! In addition to annual and perennial plants for sale, the Master Gardeners will also be on hand to give advice and answer all of your gardening questions. Admission to sale is free, plant prices vary.

Family Garden Day: Butterfly Planter
Date: Sunday, May 18       Time:2-3 p.m.     Fee:$8 per planter     All ages
Everyone is welcome to come to this workshop and create a beautiful planter that butterflies will love. Learn what plants butterflies and caterpillars love and help attract them to your yard. All materials will be provided. Registration is required by May 15th (217222).

May Flowers: Pre-School Program
Ages: 2-6      Date: Wednesday May 21       Time: 10-11 a.m.     Fee: $4
Preschoolers can discover what is blooming in the spring and have some flowery fun. Join us for a story, flower craft and fun flower activity as we learn about nature. Registration required(217230).

Stepping Stone Workshop
Date: Tuesday, May 27       Fee: $8 per stone

Enjoy creating a decorative stepping stone, just in time for summer! Stones must be left to dry and can be picked up later. This program fills up quickly. Registration required by May 23th.

First Friday Theme Party: 60s Flower Power

Feeling groovy? We sure are! Celebrate the Sixties surrounded by Flower Power. Enjoy 60s trivia, music, dancing and prizes.

Bonsai Show
Date & Time:  Saturday June 7,   10 a.m.-5 p.m.     Sunday June 8,   1-5 p.m.      $3/person or $8/family (2 adult max.)
Join the Indianapolis Bonsai Club as they showcase their unique bonsai specimens. Club members will be available to answer your questions, and vendors will have plants and supplies available for sale.

Backyard Nature: Frogs
Ages: 2-8      Date:Monday June 23     Time: 10-11 a.m.     Fee: $4 per child
Join us for froggy fun! Meet a live frog, make frog slime and learn to make frog calls! Registration required (218818).

Early Morning Photography
Ages: 16+      Date: Saturday June 28     Time: 8-10 a.m.     Fee:$5
Don’t miss this opportunity to practice your photography skills in the morning before the Conservatory opens. The Conservatory is full of tropical orchids, palms, ferns and so much more! Each photographer will be allowed a tripod during this event. Make sure to register, as space is limited (218835).

Family Fish Day
Ages: 2-12     Date: Saturday June 28     Time: 1:30-2:30 p.m.     Fee: $4 per child
This is your chance to feed the fish in the Conservatory! We’ll also do a fishy craft and practice our “fishing” skills. Registration required (218882).

Family Garden Stories & Outdoor Scavenger Hunts
Dates: Thursdays, July 10, 17, 24     Story time 2:30 p.m. followed by Scavenger Hunts from 3-4:30pm       Free      All ages
Bring the family and a blanket or some chairs to the Garden to enjoy a story show-and-tell at 2:30. Then Stop by the Conservatory and pick up a copy of this year’s hunt that will send you around the Gardens and surrounding areas with your eyes peeled. Bring your finished hunt back and receive a prize

Intro to Bonsai Workshop
Ages: 16+      Date: Sunday, July 13     Time: 1-4 p.m.     Fee: $35
Learn all about the basics of Bonsai from Scott Yelich of Eagle Creek Bonsai. Each participant will get their own tree to work on during the workshop as they learn how to care for it. Registration required (218838)- payment of $35 will be collected by instructor on day of program.

Rainforest Appreciation Day

From chocolate to chewing gum to beautiful flowers, it’s time to celebrate everything we get from the rainforest. Stop by the Conservatory for a fun and educational tour through the rainforest.

All About Bees

Meet our beekeeper and learn about bee biology and why they are important to our gardens and our world. Experience first-hand how honey is harvested and taste a sample. Registration required (218837).

Cooking with Herbs

Join the Central Indiana Herb Society in making herbal soup wreaths with herbs harvested from our Children’s Garden. Registration required by calling 327-PARK (218836). Payment will be collected by instructor.

Buzzing Bees

Have fun in the garden as we learn about bees and why they’re so important. Sample some fresh honey, experience what life is like inside the hive, and make a fun bee craft. Registration required(218823).
